Journey
Botanical scenes come to life in layers of resin, textured surfaces, and oil glazes; sewn together with and strong lines to depict the bold trees and flora. I seek to capture the heat of an early summer as if one could do so by wrapping large Japanese screens around the wafting waves of air as it rises. Placing layers of tinted glazes over textured surfaces creates a wallpaper backdrop of atmosphere of depth in which the botanical pieces can then come to life. Depicted in a contemporary softness, the subjects appear to sway and move with the wafting winds that create the journey of their life. (click here or on image to enter full gallery) |

Character Birds
Seeing what is really going on versus just looking requires one to build a story in their head -- about the individual and those surrounding them in a conversational dance. Observing the body placement and position, as the characters lean in vengeance or day dreaming, provides strong evidence of the story. But the eyes give it away entirely. Viewing the soul through ones eyes allows the viewer to experience the essence of an individual, seeing who they are, facing their life challenges and learning from acquired knowledge. Warm Breezes
Inspired by the stark drama of wood block prints, I capture the splendor of nature's imperfections in a contemporary Wabi Sabi Asian style. Here my sun-drenched trees set the mood and are inspirational focal points, capturing the simplicity of traditional woodblock pieces. These large-scale multi-panel pieces resemble Asian folding screens and can be re-arranged to suit their surroundings.

I use a Renaissance Masters approach in applying 30 to 60 layers of thin oil washes to achieve such depth in such richly drenched scenes of color that the viewer can only wish to fall into.
